My name is Katy Boegel.
I first arrived on Monhegan Island in Maine when I was four to visit my grandmother, Ruth Lothrop, who had rented a house for the summer near the Ice Pond. Along with my family, I came every summer an event I looked forward to with the same anticipation as Christmas morning. Eventually, my grandparents bought land that included the Ice Pond and built a summer cottage.
 The Ice Pond
At sixteen, my father announced to my sister and me that we would be working at the Trailing Yew for the summer. It was during that summer that I realized I wanted to belong here year round; and while most of my friends went off to college, I set about accomplishing my goal. Fortune intervened when my parents bought the old Monhegan Store in 1979 and offered me a job.
I married my friend David Boegel in 1982 at the Ice Pond House and opened North End Pizza shortly thereafter. When the old Monhegan Store closed for good, our place became a grocery store and pizzeria. I'm now the owner of the new Monhegan Store, having retired from pizza making after 20 years.

This is a journal of my life and observations of living on Monhegan Island for the past thirty years (and counting). To read more about my history, see my Full Biography.
The online journal will be updated monthly with installations three to four pages long. A sample journal and more of my writing can be read on the Samples page. I will be writing about current events on the island as well as its past history as seen from my point of view. (Subscribe now.)
